Kia ora %%First Name%%,

A ridge of high pressure lies over New Zealand over the forecast period but slowly weakens over the weekend as a weak front approaches the South Island. This front flicks past the far south during Saturday and another more active system approaches the country on Sunday. This will push the resident high northwards resulting in a moderate WSW lighter wind flow over the north of the North Island as the isobars warp, but with sea breezes along the East Coast. Expect another warm sunny weekend with OK waves out on the West Coast but along with light onshore winds. Finally some residual longer period SE swell for East Cape south thru to the Wairarapa with light offshores early but sea breezes in the arvo.

Red Beach surfer Thomas Kibblewhite has returned from a two event hiatus to claim victory at the third event of the 2013 Hyundai Tour completed at Sandy Bay, Whangarei on Sunday. Kibblewhite showed why he has become synonymous with the top echelon of longboard surfing in New Zealand claiming his victory in style with a combined heat score of 13.57 out of 20. The Women's final was taken out by Wini Paul (Sandy Bay). Paul showed her local knowledge and fierce competitive spirit to pick off the two best waves in the 25 minute final and claim victory.

Mount Maunganui's Kehu Butler and Gisborne's Jasmine Smith have claimed their respective Under 16 Divisions at the first event of the 2013 Billabong Grom Series presented by Oceanbridge completed at Mount Maunganui over the weekend. In good 1.0m waves with light onshore winds, Butler and Smith dominated their finals with victory for both surfers never looking in jeopardy.

On Saturday 9 February, volunteers are invited to join our clean-up of the wild western coastline of Muriwai Beach. Simply meet at the Muriwai Surf Club (see location map here) at the south end of Muriwai Beach at 10.30am, Saturday 9 February, to sign-in and collect clean-up equipment. From there we will split into teams and head out along the coast on foot and by 4WD vehicle. Bring your own 4WD vehicle to allow us to clean-up the largest area possible and for a great opportunity to explore this epic west coast beach! sustainablecoastlines.org

Cyclone Oswald - if only..... in Strauss

Cyclone Oswald came and went and just like the last 2 or 3 east coast lows we had in Sydney a few months ago a combo of wrong winds, tides and swell directions saw only a handful of spots being any good - and only then for short periods of time. You had to be real quick to catch the action though it may have been a different story much further up or down the coast. ... Read more...
