Best camping spots close to the major cities
Nothing like a good camp out in NZ, my favourite, Takatu, close to Auckland awesome DOC campground, beautiful beaches, waves can get good in nice North swell, empty waves early morning and evening, sure not the best waves around, can get very good but the beauty of the place and set up for family/kids makes up for this.
Early surf followed by heading over for some great fishing on the other side on peninsula, great beaches for the kids too.
Fried snapper and mussels/kina for lunch then a late evening surf followed by beers listening to the kiwi calls in the bush.
Dam magic regional park and only an hour from Auckland. Got a campout planned there in April if the waves cooperate.
id say opunake but its a long way from anywhere
I don't agree with paying to camp just doesn't seen right!

Depends, I am happy to support the DOC grounds so they can be preserved for future generations, I have done a lot of side of the road camping but with a family it can be somewhat more stressful.
The DOC grounds are some of the most beautiful and simple in the world
You should always pay to camp in some form, wherever you camp you leave some kind of footprint.
Shippies is a good example, even if you bring your rubbish back around the point and dump it in the bins it still costs the locals through council rates.
A little Koha or putting back into the community you are camping in is all good.
Why dump it in bins when you can just take it to the tip? Costs a little but at least its in the right place

Different story with family, I enjoy the ferel style camping with my boys. shelter warmth and basic food. Cold bake beans can taste fantastic on an empty gut.

Cold bake beans, not showering and sleeping rough... I long for these occasions now days...![]()
Castle point has a good campsite right by the beach but it's a bit of a drive. Lots of great spots in the area.

Yep agree, but there is a certain satisfaction when through rat cunning, hard work conniving and stress you can manage to get the whole travelling circus of women kids and dog set up at prime surf spot just as the conditions start to fire and then get the next few days surfing ur ass off and enjoying a pimped out campsite.

You're not paying to camp. You're paying for showers and flushing toilets.

Local at nowhere, eternal blow in.
Freedom camping is a hot topic amongst the townfolk around here... I think its every New Zealanders birth right to set up for the night on a beach, river or lake... just as long as you bury your number two's...

I wouldn't worry a family requires having someone willing to breed with you, I don't think it will be a problem for u.

They can also... but they tend to go to the name "spots" not to far off the beaten track.. more small paid sites in one controlled spot would be ideal around here. The trouble here is that they are just busting in new spots every 10 metres and ruining the foreshore and habitat.
small paid sites in key spots is a good idea.
And dirt cheap.

I remember meeting this old dude who used to camp up a couple of kms up the P-P road and surf at meatworks. He had been there for quite a while too - think he was from Alaska?
He owns some land up there...
oh really? i think he was on some kind of fish for 6 months in AK, back to NZ dealie the last time i saw him. Nice bloke
