natural talent, wave knowledge and a ambition of getting better. The latter usually comes from other surfers in your area, with a drive to keep up. high expectations...lots.

A well tuned board. I reckon there is a lot in it. I tend to blame my tools.

Having the biggest board in the line up, or the shortest one.

So I've taken the question two ways and will answer both.

What makes a good surfer, as in what are the inputs that give the output. BC summed it up perfectly although I'd rate natural talent last as a lack of talent can be overcome by sheer bloody mindedness.

I'd also add that a lot of really good surfers started around the age of 10 and were taught by their old man or another mentor type.

What is it about the way a surfer surfs that makes them good?

Speed, critical positioning, barrels, and lastly style. Everyone's got their own.

To add to what others have already said:

- Doing the right things on certain parts of the wave - when to bottom turn, trim, hit the lip, carve on the shoulder, air sections etc. A good surfer should know how to flow with what the wave is doing. Slater for the standups, and Ryan Hardy and Mike Stewart are the best boogers at doing this.

- Paddling ability in small or large conditions, rips, currents, etc.

- Etiquette and attitude in and out of the water. Nobody wants an idiot dropping in and snaking everybody in the lineup, nor do they want a big headed gloater claiming every single wave back on dry land. If you rip, but you're a d!ckhead, I will still hate and despise you forever - a common problem here in Auckland, as well as Australia and California.

The ability to register a large amount of data, process it at super computer speeds, create a formula that is fluid which adapts to each subtle change within a volatile situation and physically act on it within hundredths of a nano second .
The only part that you witness is the physical ride, dynamic edge to edge turning extracting every available amount of energy out of the wave.
Lastly, good elasticity of tendon and ligament, quick twitch muscle fibre. A good surfer should be able to ride most boards to near their performance potential.
Gee someone must have spiked my Waitangi day drink.

Tnet, you are confusing a nice surfer and a good one.

Obviously the ability to hold yoursurf board in a cool acceptable manner. Also I believe being able to know which way your surf board is placed on the roofracks. Here I thought it was all about how you where your shorts.
