if you don't come out don't claim it, if its so small only your head fits in it while the rest of you wiggles out on the face also not to be claimed.

exception for the first would be one of those super long barrels that you are in for ages but. can't get out of not that you really have super long barrels on the ak west coast

consider the egg & chicken & what comes first..in this case it's impossible for a close out to become a barrel, however a barrel can become a closeout.

Closeout becomes a barrel if you're fast enough to get out the other end.

Any wave below 2ft should not be claimed, unless it was longer than 3 seconds in length.

second thoughts...i suppose you could have a scenario where you pulled into a closeout, got barrelled & then busted through the curtain...rare, but could happen.

I believe your surfboarding brethren use the phrase "sneaking through the doggy door" correct?

For most average and below surfers big pipeline would almost be considered a close out. Same with big teahupoo.

A barrel you cant make is not the same as a staight closeout not really worth claiming but hell of lot more fun.

What is a claim,is wiping the water from your nose when exiting barrel.
proning out after memorable tube, pulling out after the tube when you could have hit the lip?

Claims are a personal thing, do what you feel at the time I suppose.

my claim tends to be an over excited cut back that I end up bogging then getting smacked over by the wave as the section over takes me

I guess when I was thinking about "claiming" I was referring to an internal mental process. Did I or didn't I?

So does punching through the curtain count?

What if you are barrel riding for 10-15m but can't make it out?

Then it qualifies as a closeout?

Watch out now...
mini barrel specialist has arrived.
Its not about the size of the wave/barrel its about the intensity of the wave.

ever had those waves where you are in the barrel foam thinking your are getting buried, wiping out and then suddenly get pushed out onto a clean face from no where? like your mind edits the situation...

This doesn't happen to me often but I got the taste for it the other day again, on take off turning your board and side slipping down the face and then letting your fins catch and propel you down the wall. So freaking cool, even better if you get a cover up with it which didn't happen the other day.
