It was a real carnt that day. It was about 30knot offshore and about a 3rd bigger on the sets. So real tricky to get on.

Plus I broke my leggy and had to swim the 200m back to shore

A pretty normal bigger size for Whale bay I've had many sessions at that size there, but just as I can't enter those sessions without photographic evidence you can't either.

It's what I used to call 8 feet, and my wife used to assume that I meant just a bit taller than me.

The biggest waves I've been out in were summer '84 at Piha Bar, it was lot bigger than that but I caught none on my 5'10" quad and had the worst drilling ever, a hair away from two wave hold downs.

Its funny. I wait for days like that.

Last time I went out in similar conditions I was alone. Took about 20 min to get to the peak.

It's the closest I have (video evidence of same day i was out) unfortunately

yeah 8 feet 'just a bit taller than me' little do they know! So you used to use back of wave measurements ?

Hi Chux in theory yes but in reality when it looked that big it was 8ft. Whale Bay handles that size perfectly much bigger and it gets a bit wide and slabby, although I did see a NW swell which popped up for only 20 minutes which was much larger, and handling it but very fast, Mike Bonner went out and snapped his board, about 5 times OH weirdest thing I've seen there 20 minutes later it was under head high.

Apparently George Greenough has given up the 'surfer's feet' undercalling, it's hard to do but worth the effort.

Descartes would agree and you are correct of course but barring parallel universes with Roy clones in them I'm pretty easy to identify, not so easy with a black wetsuited short boarder when one can't see the face and don't know what it looks like anyway.

I was there that day so I can vouch for the fact that it was big. I tried to paddle out in the evening for an hour then gave up. I ended up surfing two foot white's beach. The next day I had pretty fun Robinhood bay on the way to the ferry.

Who's Utah and what does he look like?

Here's a pic of me and Batts debating whether or not to paddle out on a particularly heavy day at Bells.

Johnny Utah (Keanu Reeves) is a rookie FBI Agent and former Ohio State quarterback. He and his veteran partner, Angelo Pappas (Gary Busey), are investigating a string of bank robberies by a gang known as the "Ex-Presidents" (during their robberies they use masks of former Presidents Ronald Reagan, Richard Nixon, Lyndon Johnson, and Jimmy Carter to disguise their true identities).
Pursuing Angelo's theory that the criminals are surfers, Johnny goes undercover to infiltrate the surfing community. Knowing nothing of the sport/lifestyle, he persuades orphan surfer girl Tyler Endicott (Lori Petty) to teach him to surf. In the process, Johnny develops a complex friendship with Bodhi (Patrick Swayze), the charismatic leader of a gang of surfers, Roach (James LeGros), Grommet (Bojesse Christopher) and Nathaniel (John Philbin), who accept Johnny when they realize he is a former college football star. As he masters the art of surfing, Johnny finds himself increasingly drawn to the surfers' adrenaline-charged lifestyle, Bodhi's philosophies, and Tyler.
