That's a leading question because it presupposes that there's too much length.

What you appear to be doing is not asking why I use so much length but rather suggesting that I am using too much length.

After riding short boards for 24 years and long boards for 15 years it is clear that It's more a case of 'when does lack of length lead to inefficiency?'... longer boards have a much wider range of conditions in which they work.

Of course it depends also on what the goal is, so it's relative in that regard.

Anyway I think that a well designed 12 footer is a universal length, balanced between long and short.

Another point is that it does depend on overall shape as well as length.

unlike yourself roy i dont have the many years of experience you do and have only been in the water for the last 15 years. in no way is my earlier question a dig at you.

what do you consider 'inefficiency' to be?

i agree with most of what you say here. but where it differs comes down to the old saying 'different strokes for different folks'.

just remember, i have an olo, i enjoy riding the olo and often recommend others to get themselves one.

Fifteeen years is a long time, but perhaps you don't have as much experience with long boards as I do.

I realise that you weren't having a 'dig' but probably without realising it you wrote a leading question and I had to point that out before answering.

what do you consider 'inefficiency' to be?

That depends upon the design goal, but if the board can't catch or make the waves then it's inefficient in that situation.

just remember, i have an olo, i enjoy riding the olo and often recommend others to get themselves one.

That's nice but it's a short board and your question was about longer boards.

haha, i was asking a leading question and im still waiting for an answer.

realistically, what im asking is to what length would you consider to be inefficient for a 2-4ft point break for your style of surfing?

I'd rather think about what's efficient for the conditions and your body size, for someone wanting to go for a longer board.

In that case this one would do nicely, although one could go longer or shorter.

11 feet by 23 inches wide by 1.75" thick at about 18 to 20 pounds.

Actually body size isn't critical like it is with shortboards. I rode the same Ghost 12 at 75 kg and am now 83 kg.

So, there's a big range of functional lengths, and widths, but if wanting to go longer I'd go 10 to 12 feet long depending on the shape. Volume wise for longer boards the same number of litres as one's body weight in kg works well, the standard Ghost 12 is in the 70 to 80 litre range. Again it isn't critical.

Apologies for being vague.

Who are you to decide what is useless in comparison. That could well be the perfect board for the way that surfer wants to ride.

fact is you tried once

so cos you cant ride em
or any board under 11ft you just write them off cos the reality is your a write-off but reality hurts your feelings eh !!
so blame the board
