if he had said 'the cake tin is the ultimate proving ground' then it may have meant something.
oh well, i guess if you do have something to prove in terms of surfing, then his opinion might mean something.

Saw him out at my local a few months ago... he went over the falls a couple of times then went in... was a mellow punter though.

well, altho pipe is heavier than brownlee i would suggest that chopes or shipsterns would be more of a proving ground.

Definitely the ultimate proving ground for the pros...
Pipemasters is one of the most prestigious contests in surfing.
Pipe is also the place to get known and photographed. The whole surfing industry is pretty much concentrated on that stretch

i havn't surfed pipe, nor chopes, nor shipsterns...but i've seen them on ewetube and pipe looks the easiest of the 3.

oreti pipe is classic...especially when it's 5ft & seriously heavy. sorts the kooks from the kooks thats for sure.

To be fair I think the Block presenter was referring to the history and culture of the worlds most well known tube riding breaks.

So no comparison to those mutant breaks like Chopes and Shipstern.

Only time was when I was 17 in the off season on a family trip with Mum and Dad The Pipemaster stories flowed when I got back to school
When I went back in 1999 I didnt surf it... just to crowded, actually didnt surf to many of the "name" spots for the same reason. managed to get a lot of good uncrowded waves by surfing 100m down the beach.

I dunno Seeka. If you took it at say 6ft, Teahupoo is apparently picture perfect (not at 8ft+ though). Pipe at smaller size is all about positioning. I reckon at size though, pipe looks a lot friendlier.

I spent a few season hanging at Lakeys... word is that under 8 ft at low tide its on par with pipe.. I'd believe it.

Pipe has so many different sections and varibles. 2nd and 3rd reef... so its always different, Chopes gets alittle same, same at times... Oh no another death pit...

Pipe is like a crazy as beach break on steroids, think left hand double up in nightmare mode. I just wanted to get out of there after scoring maybe 6 waves with the biggest pits ID been out in. 2nd reef and the odd 3rd reef with a couple of complete wash throughs. Inside shut downs at 6+. D ho and Ronnie Burns dropping into double hands above head pits of doom.
Waimea was 15-20 that day and I was happy to sit and watch from the rocks on the inside.

pipe is gnarly, its beauty is deceptive. sometime sand makes it a huge closeout, the reef has caves that are easy to get trapped in. so close to the shore and so deep offshore, punters prepared to wipeout for a photo or drop in, it gets real shallow and backwash is common.

And what snake and battery said.

Thing about pipe is the reef is right there, if you get pitched you get hurt. I knew it was shallow but shallow looks angry when ten foot hits it.

Pipe is a proving ground, it's easily accessed, almost anybody could paddle out. It's a paddle wave at all sizes and surfers, long boarders, body boarders and body surfers all have events there. It's the one wave where all can test and be tested. Chopes and ships terns attract a different sort of surfer but on a whole every surfer dreams of surfing pipe don't they?
