Selecting fins
Hey all,
What sort of fin would you select for a single fin 10.2ft longboard? I was talking to a mate in the weekend and he reckoned it is an ideal fun board for our small surf in Sumner Christchurch but he'd swap the fin for something bigger.
I'm relatively new to surfing so don't know how a fin effects the ride, I figure a longer fin would help with digging in for turns which would be good as thats what I'm currently working on.
Cheers
Asking a trivial question like what size fins do I use while the rest of the forum are focused on the miserly size of mellow puffs is pretty insensitive.
PM the forums top dog 2020, hes the only one with the credentials to solve the issue for you.

Local at nowhere, eternal blow in.
ask Beemer- he has a massive inventory of well tested long board fins
...the short answer is that there is not short answer.. 3 fins or 1?...size of rider?....and what you prodominantly want to do on the wave??
....ask a "real" surfer..![]()

Cheers fellas, sorry about detracting from mellowpuffs, I feel as though there is far too much packaging for how many you get.
2020 I weigh 75kg, the board is 10"2 with a single fin. I'm just beginning but I want to get the most maneuverability out of it that I can, I like trad style surfing with big turns, walking the board, nose riding etc.
At the moment the fin is around 8-8.5 inch, I'm thinking for that board I should be up around 10"??
Large churchills are mint fins. i highly recommend them.
i'm not so sure that a single fin will have that much bearing on turning Pitted. more to do with drive and hold. if you want more maneuverability then a twin, tri(but then you sacrifice straight line speed) or quad set up will be better, singles are stiff but fast & positive. is the board spinning out? have you tried a spitfire fin? i imagine a spitfire fin would be easier for turning but still offer good hold & drive.

This is the only correct fact yet.
2020 what has weight got to do with the size of fin?
I thought the fin is about the style of both the board and the rider?

churchill fins are yellow and blue. that boss is the ultimate combination. if roy was onto something great he would get his next set of family wetsuits in a similar colour combination. ![]()
Pitted your fin should be fine
considering your weight
size of board doesn't really have that much affect
have you moved it around in the box
A few general rules are:
If you are having trouble finishing out turns and cutbacks, or are not getting up and down the face quickly enough, you should move your fin up approximately 1/8'' to 1/4''.
If you are digging rails, or catching rails in the front 18'' to 24'' during cutbacks, you should move your fin back approximately 1/8'' to 1/4''.
The leading edge of the the center fin usually ends up about even with the trailing edge (at the base) of the of side fins, plus or minus 1/4''.
i'm 6'4" 100kg my fav fin is 9.5" harbour flex fin
and on my 7' single
9" fin i called the shaper and said "Mate you put a longboard fin in" it goes great tho
experiment with what you got now ...pencil mark your position changes
then if still not happy pay your cash for the harbour flex fin its the best

Why not put a fin on the nose? That would be some out of it sh1t I reckon.

The bigger you are the more surface area you need to create hold...and conversely the smaller you are the smaller fin you could get away with.

Your screen name suggests you’re experienced PITted, or is it a future goal. If you are a very average surfer I would not expect you would notice much difference in performance. If your fin is too small or too far forward, you will find the board is harder to get up on and loses speed and stability.

I tried wind surfing once when I was 12. Stood on the board for five seconds, fell off and grazed my arm on a piece of coral on the bottom. From that day on I have been the sworn enemy of all things windsurf. Mind you nothing could compare to my hatred of SUP riders. They are the devil's spawn as far as I'm concerned.

windsurfing, gnarly when learning. had a go when I was like 10, was scary falling off in the middle of the harbour and knowing you had to get it right to get back to land. on the windy days, used to get towed behind my dads windsurfer on the esky.
I remember learning in Tauranga harbour as a kid.... watching the sting rays swimming beneath you- only a fall away...

Thanks a lot for the suggestion Beemer, I'll mark the fin and have a go at moving it forward a little bit and try that out.
Like I said I'm just starting out, only started a couple of months ago but basically go out every day. Just wanting to experiment a bit with the board to see what its capable of. I'll be buying something a little shorter and less wide next year.
Cheers!

Thank you for your concern 20. It was a horrific injury that has left me scarred for life. I have "Back in Nam" type flash backs every time I see a wind-w4nker prancing around the harbour on one of their loser boards. If I had my way all windsurf boards would be thrown into an erupting volcano. Their riders would be sent to special re-education centres to be cured.

Once you can do a cutback and walk the board confidently.... go and buy a new board, mucking around with fins wont help to much with a board that size unless you are surfing the same waves over and over.
It could be for opening things like ...fuked if I know.
