Gotta be Dane Reynolds... watched Dear Suburbia last week... Danes surfing in the movie is next level, nobodies drawing lines like him. great footage of him down South.
Best part in the Vid is Dane and John John going wave for wave in EPIC barrels in Japan.

You are correct sir! [youtube.com]

I watched the first 30sec of this and picked up about 5 things he did that made me think "his technique is down I should try and incorporate some of this into my surfing".

the next 30 sec another 5 and so on until by the end I just got real confused and came to the conclusion I'd have to quit work and full time surf to have the same talent he has in his little toe

I think you'd have to say John John is the best surfer in the world. Dane & kelly tied for 2nd with Gabriel Medina 3rd (He's a year or so younger than JJ) when he get some more power in his turns around his mid twenties he may just be untouchable.

Yes when JJ gets some meat on his bones he will be unstoppable

Kelly is still the best surfer but Dane is really exciting to watch.

That turn in the Haleiwa contest...boom tail.

JJ has my vote, just seems to read the wave so well. His timing looks unforced but aggressive, classic but progressive, power but technical, young with nads of Gonad man.

Medina has some backside work and nads to stretch.

Dane is the prince of Darkness.

The King is one attention seeking focker, inspirational and lead the evolution of performance. In a way he has single handedly rewritten surfing manuals

I spend alot of time in the chair judging at surf comps and alot of the time you can almost preempt what the guys are about to do... Dane and others with an innovative approach to how they attack waves are just so exciting to watch and score...

How would you rate Medina's barrel and 2 solid turns vs Adam Mellings 3 reasonable turns (wouldn't call them all power turns)...

Sucks to be Medina is all I have to say! He might think twice about turning on the waterworks next time.

Personally the easy option is going straight in the barrel... flagging the barrel and attacking the lip on a barreling wave is 10 times harder. But depends on the day and conditions... I actually didnt watch all the final just the highlights. but saw Melling killing it in a few earlier heats.

The problem with surf comps are too subjective and rliant on wave selection, prefer skate comps everyone does the same run more fair

Just watched and judged the heat... Medina's barrel was nice but he got alittle caught up on his turns... Melling's 3 turn wave, look at the speed he gained coming out of the second into the third... hard to pull a gouge like that and come out with more speed, right in the critical section too... but I had it Melling 14.7, Medina 14.6, S-Bass 12.8 and Ace 10.7 close...
