Solo surfing

Some of my buddies don't do this at all. I mean go out by yourself. If you take as criteria, nobody else out (and I mean nobody), and you must at least get out the back, catch one wave and stand up, how many different breaks have you surfed solo? My own count is about thirty, some of which I've surfed numerous times by myself (Maungamaunu would be the pick of the bunch but there are others. Tairua and Makarori for starters). Started thinking about it this morning after surfing Brighton in the fog, by myself. It was small, granted. Last time I did that I got into trouble coz the other half was sitting on the beach (Gore Bay)and complained she didn't know where I was. Neither did I at times.

I do it a fair bit - joy of having mid week days off couldnt tell you how many beaches but doesnt really worry me too much if no one else is out or around. couple of years back rememeber having an epic day at the local on fathers day all by myself for 3-4 hours till i presume the extended lunches finished

I was out in Kaikoura last week and at the end of an epic 4 hours surf...head high, reeling barrels, perfect and glassy. I came in and there was a guy there going "oh man, thought you might be staying out, don't like surfing by myself". I don't know whether he'd had a scare before, or was unsure about his ability, or what, but there is no way I would turn up to that and not go out. No doubt he hung about until someone else came along and scored less waves. Bizarre.

I'd probably do 90% of my surfing solo. It's very hard to get people to come and surf with me unfortunately. I'm not sure if it's the waves I surf or some kind of personality defect. Maybe both.

I surf solo a ton. No worries, best surfs are solo in my opinion, I've done my biggest airs, longest barrels and most perfect conditions when no one has seen it.

Pretty much surfed Onemana for a whole week by myself last Easter. I've had solo surfs numerous times in front of the homes ive lived in, wangas, Napier, Piha, Tara's.

my first surf ever was solo...so was my last. counting the spots i've surfed sans solo would be quicker than counting the the spots surfed alone.
i did fog once on the waitamata when i was forced to mutiny a ship that was skippered by a drunk captain who forgot that going to sea usually involved taking a radio or a compass, even a map would have been handy. fortunately the sober me knew there was a 1 meter north swell running which was handy for navigating the shipping lanes in next to zero visibility. i can tell you for free that dodging looming container ships in a small ship with a useless drunk crew is a tad nerve wracking...should have gone surfing instead.

I learned solo and still surf solo most of the time. Its great surfing with mates but there's nothing like arriving at dawn to a pumping spot with no one there, light offshore and the sun just coming up.

I often narrate when on my own too - I do the same with fishing trips although that's more of me cursing myself for casting into a tree than anything else

I was surfing Sumner that morning, couldn't see anything on the webcam but glad I went down had a few fun rides on the longboard. Couldn't see the shore or out to see it was pretty surreal haha.
I just started a bit over a month ago, I work nights so can get out for a morning surf any day I like - my surfing buddy got a job a few weeks ago so have been a loner since - I still enjoy it just as much by myself I've been out every day this week and am looking like a tomato

Here's some solo sessions I've had

This one I only surfed about 5 waves and freaked out cause it was breaking so hard on the super shallow bank.

Access was down a steep path, then a long paddle off a beach to the top of the point.

My wife happened to with me, so did get the following photo of me actually on a wave from the top of the cliff. If I hurt myself though I was in trouble though - there was now way she could help.

This one was a fun peak for a couple of days - didn't see anyone the whole time
