Before everyone starts in with the vicious sup/gizzie bashing.....yes it was my b/day on friday
Ignore the other pics but the second pic was taken at makorori centres saturday morning.
Three sup people for sure but also two kneeboarders & a longboarder & a shortboarder in the mix.
Fun waves & friendly people (pipefins not there)

Is pipefins still pipefins? Seemed to notice the much trendier "stormfins" a while back.
Is that like a "storm of hatred?"

I've become SUP curious
Cruising down the tairei coast looking at all the breaks
imagining a summers day paddling from one to the next just exploring
might try borrow one next weekend

oh i feel so much better confessing that
i never dreamed a 5'5" and an 11' SUP in my quiver

As an owner of 4 shortboards, 3 longboards, and a SUP, I can say that once you're actually riding the wave, a SUP is far an away the most boring ride. Its like the biggest fattest most sluggish longboard in the world, a fact that fortunately you dont really have time to contemplate, because you're too busy wondering what the hell to do with the paddle.

Exploring the coast from the water is seriously cool though. I've found 3 local reefs that I never new existed.... And from the water figured out how to get foot access with a proper wave craft

SUPed today
Borrowed board
overhead point
forgot my leggie
paddled out the back
fell off 50 times paddling about a km up and down the coast
paddled in
fell off going for a wave lost board
home for a cuppa tea

respect for SUPers but i don't think its my cup of tea
will try a few more times
seems a great fitness thing
but not really a board i'd like to 'surf'

I wanted to troll this thread to wind up Spud et el by talking up SUPs. And then I clicked on your link Gizzie and those pictures hurt my eyes. SUPing looks so ridiculas it should be outlawed and poeple like you should be strung up in the town centre for everyone to p1ss on.

It's actually harder than it looks the first couple times. They can be kinda fun when it's flat or the waves are batsheet. Drop knee backhand lean on the paddle bottom turns actually feel kinda nice. The other fun thing to do on them is take them out in the large stuff and scare yourself crapless as your leg is attached to a giant sea anchor- gets the adrenaline going when you scudding down the drop on a barge

But for real waves...well no question what's better

What size was the sup you borrowed? in my inexperienced humble opinion I reckon try at least an 11 foot for your first go. Although in saying that the homemade 14foot is tippier IMO than the 11ft Jimmy. Was your paddle the right length for you? - you might have been out of balance if you were leaning over to much. They are super fun, stick at it.

10'10" walden magic model
yes i do think paddle was bit short
found i liked paddling around but would have much rather been surfing
i think i'd buy one for exploring on crappy days but i'd rather be gardening when i can't surf
so i'd give it another go cos it was fun even on the first day and i've more respect for SUPers
where as crew like ant brain wont ever try anything new and just bag on what they don't understand.

hmmm more info and my partner will probably recite you a blurb on what hes found so far by trial and error...
Need more info on what you want, ie longboard styles? Big Waves? Surf more or paddle around exploring? .... .... ... etc etc etc
