Wannasurf is a classic... Wannawhine more like I looked into a while ago and came to the conclusion that a boat was needed, also swell...

A buddy has done the last 2 winters up there on an expedition boat and says the place pumps along with another island chain up those ways. from what I have heard New Ireland is the place you want to start.

Wannasurf is full of whiners but it also has a few gem's of info if you weed through the BS. I used it alot when I started doing seasons in the Caribbean and it saved a LOT of gas driving cars and boats around chasing quality surf

Loosely related to this thread. This place would need the same conditions as PNG but looks the goods on its day.

I haven't been *yet* but have done a lot of looking into it and just recently met up with a couple who live there doing WHO work. They rated New Ireland, Kavieng in particular and further north. The one thing them kept maintaining was to spend as much time as you can there as things move slowly and swells can be inconsistent but as there are a massive amount of outlying islands that are surfable but you need to make a friend who has a boat.

A few other items:
Along with sharks they have saltwater crocs
PNG has phenomenal wireless and 3G coverage - even the islands have it apparently!
The domestic abuse rate is an incredible 92%.
Port Moresby is a pretty dangerous spot and NGO workers live in compounds.

Full report please mate - can't wait to see how ya go!

Down south any chance I could rough your mates with an email, got a few questions for them if possible. Think we'll be avoiding the main island as much as possible so would like to sort places on the islanded where we could fill up with supplies without getting murdered mugged and raped =) Although if Pena's correct maybe a it wouldn't be so bad.

Great spot for surf. Don't expect it BIG but it does get really consistent. I surfed 20 out of 21 days. Sometimes twice a day and one time 3. My pick of resorts is the Kavieng - Nusa surf Resort. On a small island with wickedly rustic pole huts and all eco managed. Andrew Abel has PNG surf scene running well with a daily stipend going to the local village where you may be surfing. Most of the spots are only reachable by banana boat but there are a couple of short hike/paddle options close to the camp if the surf gets up a bit. When I was there, there was a guy getting ready to do catamaran boat trip/stays. That would have opened up a few more options on the island chain further out into the Bismark Sea. Apart from the hassle of getting there, spending a night in Port Moresby inside a razor wire security compound, and the iffy chance of getting a seat on the inter island airfcraft, all time wasting - go back in a heartbeat. So would my good lady. If fact I think it was her most enjoyable surf trip - certainly top 3.
The natives on these outer islands are more Melanesian than PNG Highlanders. Much more peaceful. But keep them off the pi$$. Reason goes out the window if they get tiddly.
Raoul Island was the pick of the banana boat trips. A classic tiny spot that had lefts down one side and rights down the other. Wrapping all the way to the back side of the island where there was just enough room to park the boat and take the picnic hamper.
Jeez - I'm talking myself into a return trip.
Oh! Great fishing and diving. WW2 Jap airplanes in the jungle and on the ocean floor.
If you love betel nuts, you'll go nuts over PNG

Lived there between '81-'87 ...and no desire to go back. ...ever!

Went there looking for uncrowded waves, a SP paradise that no-one had really explored for waves then, and a bit of adventure. Ended up with some okay waves, several doses of Malaria, not feeling comfortable driving out in the countryside because of the liklihood of holdup - and an Australian friend from the Gold Coast whose wives was pack-raped by 14 of the local raskols over a weekend.

It's a whole different thing when you take a holiday for a couple of weeks, (and it's a bit more civilised now because there are a few other people want waves)but when you live there and have to deal with a lot of the violence and the corruption, the sparkle wears thin after a while.

And would certainly not take a woman over. Yes there are some waves, mainly on the North Coast. You do get waves on the South Coast if you don't mind riding riding the outer reef on your own, but I was only able to do that 'cause I owned a boat.

Here's the news of a group from Australia that went to the North coast for waves in 2010 ...

As Arch said the Melanesians from some of the Islands outside of PNG are a little mellower, but with a few stubbies inside them that can all change really quickly.

As far as female company goes, forget it. I got by by getting together with a Philipino girl that worked for me and really that's my best memories of the place. As for the Buai or betel nut ...it's like drinking tequila out of a toilet.

Want some serious fun, clear blue water ...then go get a job in Micronesia.

got back from PNG - traveled through Vanawatu and solomons on the way. Got som sick waves in Solos. But PNG was the goods. seemed to get decent swell from all acounts, no issues with wind and really epic world class set ups. Arch pretty much nailed it. If anyones kean to do a cheap trip up there over in the summer theres a space on my boat (since I've bailed) If anyones interested let us know.

haha more or less Bionic... charge extra for coastland scrubbers of course =)
Na its 50 NZ a day on the boat which equals all your kai and your dingy missions out to the waves. pretty cheap once onboard if you can stay off the cans. it just covers costs so the boat stays afloat.
