surprised no ones already done this
There seems to be a quite a bit of sympathy for this overweight german cartoon tellytubby, either along the lines of
why dont they arrest the youtube guys as well
or
the americans are telling NZ what to do
or
prove hes a crim before hes extradited..
or
the arrest was totally over the top
In my opinion
I'm no fan of the USA in general but this current situation is what happens when you make yourself the youtube posterboy for how much money you have made from illegal sources and how much money you can burn being an @rsehole..
He made this money distributing copyright material, this is illegal!! pirate bay, limewire kazaa style, and... they are all under heavy legal manners or shut down, now its Kims turn, in what universe is what he does legal??
(yes i know scooter, the free internet dude
)
Is the sympathy because its convenient for you all to get your copyright songs and movies free and you would like to believe hes some sort of internet freedom fighter...?
If he were knocking over banks and posted internet videos of himself having a millionaires lifestyle, great laughs, waving around guns and bathing in a pool filled with imported spring water and bikini babes with the proceeds, he couldnt plead that he was redistributing wealth or upholding the freedom of money distribution and that it wasnt fair when the cops came to bust his door down. You also cant claim its over the top to have armed cops involved when half your youtube videos show you waving around shotguns and military assault hardware.
Any one on here thats cast a c0cked eye at the crafar or cameron deals should welcome the turfing out of a guy whos lazy ten million meant he could sidestep his many previous criminal convictions and buy his way into the country
as for megaupload hosting legit files
If you store your legit files on a website that distributes files illegally and they get busted you cant whine about it. Imagine if there was a bank run by the mafia, that gave away free money, and you knew that free money was stolen, would you put your money into that bank?
if you would... your an idiot...
You can tell im not a fan
IMO hes fat, redefines the term gauche and he deserves whatever he gets.
I only hope that Mr dotcoms gazillions take a thorough beating as he tries to defend himself in court... and good luck with that. Someones got to be the whipping boy and Dotcoms expansive butt is the perfect medium for uncle sam to paint some heavy stripes...
shock and awe my friends, shock and awe...
PS
watch Scooter give himslef apoplexy defending fatboy and his internet pig trough...

Free CDs distributed by a label on behalf of a signed artist are / were a promotional tool, this would apply to mag cover samplers or compilations given to radio and retail, back in the day when this was common they would rarely be whole albums but rather selected tracks from an album to build a buzz for an upcoming release.

they let him in and just cause america gives us orders we follow them. too late now.
Gotta agree with alot of that Stats. He was stealing property and should be dealt with accordingly and if you downloaded from his site you are RECEIVING stolen goods and thats what makes people support him, cause they are involved in the crime also.
So much music around - its noise, good on him for making minstrals performers. Do they arrest the CEO of NZ post because he knows that drugs are sent in the mail?
If music corporations had sold us mp3s in timely manner, then they could have gone on to selling us flac now. Extorting the virtues of lossless standards, a never ending re-packaging.

Fu(k music companies
20 years of $35 CD's and now they wonder why we are down/uploading not caring about the industry or artists!
Radiohead and co got it right 100% ...going indi to the fans
we will pay the artist but fu(k the marketing men and corporate gits
fu(k years of downloading have passed and itunes and bandcamp is all the legit download world can come up with
obviously the corp want loads of $$$ not a reasonable price for their product
the up/download crew will always beat the corps
I'm 50/50 on Megaupload (never up/downloaded from them)
they did have servers of copyrighted material so he did break the law and will most likley die in prison
whereas the likes of piratebay and isohunt hold no material on servers the sharing is from user to user they just provide the conduit
many legit artists and publishers have had their legitimately legal work deleted as the govt deleted Megauploads servers ...illegal censorship
hope they had backups!
in 5 months of NZ's toothless upload laws 25 notices served to lady gaga and adele uploaders ![]()

the rest of us carry on down/uploading as we were !
the sites you hear about are 0.1% of whats out there but you got to be invited to the rest of the sites ...good luck FBI ![]()

Thats correct, but way too small to bother with, the kicker is if you then go on to make a lot of copies of that CD or DVD and try and sell them.
Then (like the guy from Otara markets who was on the news a few years back) they will nail you to the wall..
I think it was his second offence and he got considerable jail time
It may be inconvinient but it is the law...
more murky is are the rumours that the new next gen Xbox will have some sort of usage prevention so that you cant play a second hand game on it...
the second hand market always annoyed the music industry but was seen as an inconvinient part of the whole. no record companies ever threatened to stop supplying real groovy for instance
the second hand market is seen as a bigger thorn in the side of the gaming industry than downloading free games which requires major tech skills and garuantee busting mods to the consoles...
But effectively making a game purchase something your stuck with for life, i would say, is a bridge too far, the backlash already starting should put microsoft on notice, as the second hand market in books, music, games, toys, video and just about anything else (cars for instance) pretty much drives the new one...
I sell my old games on trade me so i can afford the coin to buy new ones... once you have played through a game like drake or God of war there is little incentive to make the journey again..

Radio stations have to pay APRA fees to play music, then the musicians get paid from that. They can't just buy a album and play it to thousands of people for there own commercial gain. Even a coffee shop has to pay APRA to play a CD to its customers.

ah theres the scooter we know and love, i wondered where he had gone...
space cadets right and again its a matter of scale, a coffee shop, retail store or house party isnt worth apra or anyone else going after (though they have in the past) DJs are covered by the venue (presuming it does pay Apra)
One of the reasons why some westfeild retail stores play classical music is becuse there is no copyright and they can avoid becoming the next cash cow apra takes aim at..
I had my own run in with apra when they wanted a (considerable) cut of the ticket sales from my gigs and a playlist from each DJ who played at them so they could 'allocate royalties to the appropriate artists...'
I said i was happy to pay both if they could supply me with an exact reckoning of why they wanted to charge what they were asking for, a list of artists they would be paying and how much in royalties each artist would be getting. (which if i was paying i was entitled to) They backed off pretty quick...
Apra in NZ survives on easy prey like hitting up the promoters of the pearl jam gigs because Eddie Vedder sang crowded house songs... which was a cut and dried case...
technically even Blunt should pay royalties for any cover versions he plays with his band in a paid gig.
but no ones gonna chase him
Also the money does not go to the appropriate artists, it is actually divided by the amount of radio play and sales an artist gets... its pretty technical but the end result is like pro surfing, the guys at the top win big and the lower chart hitmakers (or less popular ringtone downloads) get bugger all, certainly not even the cut they are entitled to.
In the UK and europe they have a thing called 'needle time' which means that any radio / tv station playing and artists music has to pay a per minute fee which mostly goes direct to the artist for the privilege...
they dont have it in the US and NZ...
George 'car crash' Michaels later songs are all radio unfriendly 5 and a half minute opuses because he knows how to play the game, a 5 min song.. makes 40% more money from needle time than a conventional 3.5 minute radio song.
Im still waiting for someone to come up with some actual support for dotcom, looks like hes not got a lot here... which is what you get with his act.

a sweeping generalisation and all the more ironic as the said murderers and rapists getting let off with a slap on the wrist because john key and crusher collins are much more concerned with making sure boy racers dont zip up and down past thier mansions and thier land developer mates can bowl heritage buildings they want to build flats on and cut down trees that get in the way of thier views, oh and of course letting overseas criminals into the country as long as they have enough money to buy thier way in....

I think you are intentionally being provocative.
Whether he was intentionally encouraging people to upload copyrighted files or not is speculation that should be sorted in a court of law, which incidentially will be paid by us. To be extraditable he has to have committed an offence under NZ law.
To operate a dropbox, is not an offence.

i reckon the fat fuker's wealth has come at the loss of profit of the artist to some degree.
i couldn't give a fuk about the record labels losses however. they had the chance to evolve when music became digital but chose not to and didn't. So instead the consumer evolved without them, leaving them behind to try and catch up. Now with anti-piracy laws they are trying to reverse evolve the market to a time when the labels profited best. This is a man in the death throws.
With tech nowadays the artist should be the boss and signing a label to support them instead. death to the middle man i say.

Well actually.....
Any request for extradition from New Zealand
must relate to an “extraditable offence” which
is defined as an offence that:
• Carries a maximum penalty of not less than
one year’s imprisonment in the requesting
country;
and
• Involves conduct that would be regarded as
criminal had it occurred in New Zealand,
and
would have carried a similar penalty.•
Is specified by the extradition treaty, if there
is one.
Please note that by NZ law a person can be extradited to any country that requests it, New Zealand does not have to have a formal extradition agreement with the other country!
Also they were quite happy to extradite that chap who killed the taxi driver to china which has the death penalty for murder (apparently the chinese said they would not apply it in this case... yeah right)
I havent heard wether Mr dotcom has had any such bargain applied to his extradition as the yanks can be pretty crazy with the sentencing depending on what state your tried in, multiple CONSECUTIVE life sentences are not uncommon resulting in hundreds of years of jail time... now that would be unfortunate....
You are being quixotic in then attacking ARPA, this duopoly in your convictions seems absurb (sorry for the royspeak)
Dont be sorry, I agree... 'Absurb' is indeed very 'royspeak....'
as for Apra, I didnt 'attack them'
When they went after me they thought i was just another cash cow they could scare with a demand letter, unfortunately for them my background meant i could argue the case with them with thier own rules and my argument was that the money they were taking would not go to the artists that they said they were going to pay with it...
It seems they agreed with me as i didnt hear any more about it after that... I guess they went after easier pickings... (not unusual)....
I would have been happy to pay if they would have said the money was going to the artists played at the events, unfortunately the way they process payments meant they could not in any way garuantee that, and instead the money would have been distributed to NZ chart toppers, which incidentally are pretty much 100% overseas acts so there was not even any upside for NZ there..
would you have given them 12k for one gig so they could give it to the vengaboys and celine dion??

i think its an art form and business model in the death throes, i agree, But at the moment you have guys like dotcom being the middleman making millions and no upside or payment for the artist or the label... the two entities that for all the moaning, own the music...
