A new Dragon Board
We are approaching the Year of the Dragon, which is when we build Dragon Boards.
This coming year of the Dragon is the first one since 1964 which is a Water Dragon year, so it is exceptionally auspicious for a Dragon surfboard.
The previous Dragon Board was built during the year 2000.
At 13'9' long and 23 to 24 inches wide the Dragon board has a length to width ratio of 7:1, and with a low rocker ( only 7 inches overall) it relies more on displacement based lift ( buoyancy ) than planing lift than most boards during the transition between paddling and surfing.
Dimensions are
length 13'9"
Width 24"
Thickness 2 & 5/8"
Weight ( projected) 55 pounds
Volume 90 litres approx
Rails 50/50 elliptical ( continuous )
Rocker circular arc 7 inches overall
The original board proved itself to be an exceptionally good and reliable performer over a wide range of conditions, from knee high to triple overhead reef waves. it took a bit of getting used to taking off on waves over head high on such a long and heavy board ( the original board was 65 to 70 pounds in weight) but the beast never let me down and survived some drops which I thought were impossible, so confidence was gained through experience.
This board will be a tad wider, thicker and lighter than the original, but still has beefed up scantlings to keep it heavier than it would be with my regular schedule. Planking is 10mm instead of 7 to 8mm, blocking extends into the board further ( also required for the 'pinched' or elliptical rail section) and there is more solid blocking in the tail area.
The extra weight means more effort is required to carry and paddle the board, but that is more than offset by the fact that it is there when it is needed i.e. at all times when riding the wave and particularly in strong offshore or bumpy conditions.
Riding the Dragon was a unique experience and I'm looking forward with slight trepidation to doing it again.

Not a bad idea for the year that it is, DRAGON ![]()
Precisely so, the last Dragon board was built during the year 2000, also the year of the Dragon.
This year's the Water Dragon too, that only happens twice in a century

Strange I googled it and this is what I found. Dragon Years follow the Rabbit and recur every twelfth year.

one of my cousins mrs always reminded me of a dragon in a authorative, fearsome, elegant and proud sort of way. i told one of their daughters after a night on the turps and she thought it was quite funny and passed on my thoughts to her mum. now i always get the cold shoulder ![]()
thats odd.

The maori taniwha can be seen as a dragon too
They are scary that might be the reason?
Hey Pipefins your Pm box is full, you'll have to stop pillow fighting with BC.

Some cultures see them as relating to wisdom creation ( as in maori ) and devinity, knowledge and wisdom, quetzalcoatl in the aztec mythology dragon in the chinese, the mayans the hindus the african nation the Norse mythology all have reflections of the serpent or dragon being in a positive light. in fact i think it was only the serpent in the bible which "tempted" eve into eating from the tree of "knowledge of good and evil", which was depicted as evil, Quite odd. Since the more you you know between right and wrong the more ethical decisions you can make. God punished them for it. So in the bible the serpent comes of as evil.

a serpent is more of a snake though isnt it?
A maori taniwha type creature that lives in the sea is called a marakihau (sea dragon).
pity Neptune is already there holding it down. why you dont see dragon fish, Neptune ate them.

Yeh true. . but if you take the chinese dragon for example its usually depicted as a long snake like body, seems to be a relation there but they might be two different things, they both seem to be related to the same kind of thing though wisdom health knowledge new life . Birthing of things, creation. Knowledge seems to be a key factor though. .Interesting stuff .

It says on the wiki a creature with serpentine and reptilian traits. Also the word dragon is derived from greek: Serpent of huge size, watersnake.

yeah the story goes that the serpent was cursed and would have to wriggle on its belly so that would imply it had legs to begin with.
and in my opinion about the dragons has everyone forgotten about dinosaurs? i reckon there are/were some left over dinos floating around

see i farked him up so bad, he has reached out to roy and giving him praise. Just explaining how I change people.
...he is not the first to seek an aliance with Roy hafter having abused him for so long....I think we all know who I am talking about...
Back on topic- I liked the old dragon board - it was massive 17 feet I think, with a sensational plan shape and needle point pin tail- looking forward to see how this one evolves..

Howzit 2020,
The original Dragon was 13'9" by 23" wide, the only change I'm making apart from tuberculing the fin and an improvement to the construction is to go an inch wider, and a few pounds lighter to gain a bit more buoyancy.
Compared to the FP boards like the Ghost it's flatter in the rocker so has very long legs.
The 'Waikiki' is the 17 foot version.
Here's the original Dragon.

Yeah Silas does a good job, it helps to use a telephoto rather than a wide angle for water photography.
