Cyclone Oswald came and went and just like the last 2 or 3 east coast lows we had in Sydney a few months ago a combo of wrong winds, tides and swell directions saw only a handful of spots being any good - and only then for short periods of time. You had to be real quick to catch the action though it may have been a different story much further up or down the coast.

The swell peaked early Tuesday morning around the 8-10ft mark and with the winds turning southerly I hit a couple of a spots down the coast from Sydney but by the time I arrived early arvo the swell had quickly dropped (just like it does on Auckland's east coast) to a solid 5-6ft. Problem was the tide was heading towards low which did not suit where I was at.

So it was back in the car and a quick sprint back up the coast to just north of the Gong where the late session proved to be ok. It wasn't as big as other breaks in the area but the boys were getting their fair share of action.

The east/north east swell has continued to hang in all week at just under the 6ft mark but the winds are changing direction daily, sometimes several times, and have not had enough west in them to get the coast really firing. The morning sessions this weekend look our best hope.

Cheers Strauss
